Islam provides a comprehensive framework for addressing all aspects of life, including family matters. Pre-Islamic Arabian society faced numerous challenges in family life, with each tribe and region adhering to unique customs and norms. Women were sometimes maltreated, while in other instances, they were granted authority. The status of men also varied significantly, with some being slaves and others holding leadership positions. No specific guiding principles were established for both genders; instead, they abided by the societal and tribal norms that prevailed. Sometimes, these norms also got disrupted. The advent of Islam brought about significant changes, resolving these issues and establishing a set of principles and regulations. Islamic family laws safeguard domestic life, delineating responsibilities, conduct, and social positions for both women and men.
Islamic scholars, over time, have elaborated on these laws, considering the context and circumstances of their application. In doing so, they have identified societal barriers, misconceptions, and ambiguities. This paper elucidates the understanding of Islamic family laws and highlights contemporary challenges in applying these principles.
