Abstract

Following the foundational tenets of Islam, the discourse surrounding the permissibility (halal) and prohibition (haram) of consumables has emerged as a preeminent concern within the broader framework of Islamic teachings. While its importance has been underscored across a spectrum of references over time, its necessity and relevance have been further stressed by two distinctive factors. The first pertains to the attribution of the legal edicts concerning permissibility and prohibition to the divine mandate of Allah Almighty, and it is obligatory for all Muslims to act upon it and have knowledge of it. The second necessity is that adhering to halal and haram not only brings spiritual benefits but also worldly advantages to individuals.  Embedded within the jurisprudential framework of Islamic law is the insight that safeguarding one's physical well-being lays the foundation for individuals to holistically engage with their religious responsibilities and achieve a state of comprehensive spiritual fulfillment. From this perspective, Islam's concept of halal and haram is very clear, comprehensive, and significant in terms of human requirements. Marine creatures are viewed from two perspectives: as a source of livelihood and nourishment. However, questions are frequently raised about the permissibility of consuming them, with more on this aspect than the economic one. In the present milieu, there exists a rigorous struggle to codify a structured framework for delineating the halal and haram, accompanied by a concomitant reevaluation of the established criteria for classification. In this connection, understanding sea creatures is crucial and is expounded upon in the subsequent sections.
