A review of selected contemporary ijtihadi institutions of the world of Islam

Abstract

During the reign of the Rashidun Caliphs, the areas under the rule of Muslims began to increase. When people started becoming Muslims in droves, the Sahaba kram (raziyallahu anhu )felt the need to establish centers of jurisprudence. Seven centers were established in Makkah, Medina, Kufa, Basra, Syria, Egypt and Yemen. In today's age, the Ijtihad institutions of the Islamic world are a continuation of the effort that the Companions worked hard for. In these institutions, under the supervision of major jurists, contemporary problems are solved in the form of collective ijtihad. These institutions have their existence and important place in the Arab o Ajam world. The sub-continent is also not behind other regions in this important work. Important ijtihadi institutions in the subcontinent are performing their duties with great effort. While the main purpose of these institutions is to guide the Ummah correctly, it is also to protect the religion from wishful thinking and wrong interpretations. The best minds of the Ummah are spending their minds in Ijtihadi efforts.
