The life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ contains an important military dimension that cannot be understood merely through a list of battles. After the migration to Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ became the leader of an organized Muslim community that faced political, military and security challenges. He therefore developed measures for defense, organized military expeditions, appointed commanders, consulted his Companions, assessed the movements of opponents, adopted defensive strategies, negotiated treaties and established ethical limits for warfare. This article examines these aspects of Prophetic leadership through the Qur’an, authentic Hadith and classical sources of Seerah. Particular attention is given to the battles of Badr, Uhud and the Trench, the expedition of Mu’tah, and the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. The study argues that the military leadership of the Prophet ﷺ was not based on force alone. It combined preparation, discipline, consultation, courage, strategic planning, diplomacy and moral responsibility. His military conduct also demonstrates that warfare was not regarded as an unrestricted sphere of violence; rather, clear limits were placed on the treatment of non-combatants and on the fulfillment of agreements. The Prophetic model therefore presents military leadership as a responsibility governed by justice, discipline and ethical restraint.
