This study examines the image of the Algerian son-in-law in Dr. Fadila Malhaq’s novel Rameem, adopting a descriptive-analytical approach to explore the artistic and social dimensions of this character within the narrative structure. The study analyzes the three sons-in-law portrayed in the novel—Nadir, Rabie, and Naeem—and investigates the diverse images through which the novelist constructs their personalities. The analysis reveals that the Algerian son-in-law is not presented as a stereotypical or one-dimensional figure; rather, he appears in multiple forms, including the compassionate and understanding son-in-law, the patient and broad-minded husband, the supportive family member, the psychologically manipulative and self-interested husband, the balanced and successful family builder, and the realistic figure confronting family crises. These diverse representations reflect the complexity of family relationships and the social and psychological transformations within contemporary Algerian society. The study further demonstrates that Dr. Fadila Malhaq employs variation in characterization and narrative contrast to create realistic and dynamic personalities that transcend simplistic moral judgments. Consequently, the novel offers a profound literary vision of the Algerian son-in-law as an influential member of the extended family whose attitudes and behavior significantly contribute to either family cohesion or disintegration. The study concludes that the diversity of these representations enhances the artistic depth of the novel and reflects the writer’s realistic perspective on the dynamics of Algerian family life.
