This research article presents a systematic and analytical study of ʿIlal al-Ḥadīth (the science of hidden defects in hadith), focusing on its conceptual foundations, classifications, and methodological approaches for detecting subtle flaws in prophetic traditions. It further examines the scholarly contributions of Imam al-Tirmidhi alongside other prominent hadith critics, highlighting their role in the development of this intricate discipline. The study begins by exploring the linguistic and technical definitions of ʿillah, demonstrating that it is not merely an apparent weakness but rather a concealed factor that may compromise the authenticity of a hadith despite its outward soundness. A comparative analysis of classical definitions provided by hadith scholars is undertaken to clarify the theoretical framework of this science. The article also categorizes various types of ʿilal, including those related to the chain of transmission (isnād) and the text (matn), as well as distinguishing between effective (qādiḥah) and non-effective defects. In addition, it elaborates on the critical methodologies employed in identifying such defects, such as the comprehensive collection of transmission routes, evaluation of narrators, and comparative analysis of variant reports. These approaches reflect the depth and precision required in this specialized field. Particular emphasis is placed on the methodological contributions of Imam al-Tirmidhi, whose approach is noted for its balance between critical scrutiny and pedagogical clarity. His works not only identify hidden defects but also explain their underlying causes, making them especially valuable for both scholars and students of hadith. In conclusion, the study underscores the significance of ʿIlal al-Ḥadīth as a vital tool for understanding the nuanced criteria of hadith authentication. Mastery of this science is essential for advanced scholarship in hadith studies, and this article aims to provide a coherent and insightful introduction to its core principles and scholarly legacy.
