A Research Review of the Israelite Texts Mentioned in the Tafsir al-Sarraj al-Munir (Tafsir al-Sharbin)

Abstract

This study critically examines the presence and treatment os israiliyyat (judeo- Biblical narratives) in Tafsir al-Siraj al-Munir by the shafi exegete imam shams al din Muhammad al Khatib al- shirbini (d. 977 AH). Although al- shirbini demonstrates strong commitment to the Quran, authentic Sunnah, linguistic analysis, and the cred of Ahl al- Sunnah WA al- jamaah, his Tafsir like many classical words, is not entirely free from israili narrations.

The research shows that al-shirbini generally adopts a critical approach toward such reports, explicitly rejecting weak or fabricated narrations that contracdict Quranic principles or undermine prophetic infallibility. He frenquently relies on the arguments of leading scholars such as Imam Afkhr al Din al- Razi.However, in matters where the Quran remains silent on historical details, he occasionally transmits israili narrations without clarification or critique.These reports, often originating from transmitters known for narrating judeo- Bibilical material, lack suppot from authentic traditions.The study concludes that al-shirbini’s approach is balanced yet inconsistent, highlighting the need for methodological caution when engaging with classical Tafsir literature.
