This study explores the concept of freedom of expression in the context of contemporary challenges, examined through the guidance of the Qur’an and Hadith. Islam acknowledges the importance of expressing opinions and upholding truth; however, it emphasizes that such freedom must be exercised within ethical and moral boundaries. The Qur’an encourages believers to speak with justice, honesty, and responsibility, as reflected in verses that command standing firmly for justice and speaking words that are right and truthful.
The teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) further highlight that a person should speak good or remain silent, establishing a principle of responsible communication. In the modern era, the expansion of digital media and social platforms has amplified the scope of expression, but it has also introduced serious concerns such as misinformation, defamation, and hate speech.
This paper argues that while Islam supports freedom of expression as a fundamental right, it also provides a comprehensive framework to regulate it through accountability, truthfulness, and respect for others. The solution to contemporary issues lies in adopting these Qur’anic and Prophetic principles, ensuring that freedom of expression contributes to social harmony, justice, and moral integrity rather than conflict and harm.
