A Comparative Study of Shah Waliullah and Sir Syed Ahmad Khan’s Concept of Taweel

Abstract

Shah Waliullah and Sir Syed Ahmed Khan are the two prominent persons in the Islamic history. They are the seminal scholars of their time. They got the reputation in the field of understanding the Holy Quran in the Subcontinent, as they two wrote the principles of understanding the Quran. In understanding the Holy Quran, Taweel is the term which remained under the debate in the early comers (Mutaqadimeen). They and late comers, Mutakhireen, differentiated between Tafsir and Taweel according to their understanding and their tastes in the understanding the Quran. Thus, it is necessary to understand the meaning of Tafsir and Taweel of Shah Waliullah and Sir Syed Ahmed’s concept and the difference between them according to their understanding. After understanding and analyzing the concept of Taweel and Tafsir of Shah Waliullah and Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, this research finds that Shah Waliullah used the term at broader level. He used Taweel as a tool of understanding of meaning under the umbrella of Quran, Hadith and Fiqh. On the other hand, Sir Syed used this term at shorter level, putting it only under the Quran as the tool of understanding the meaning in at notorious level. This research is a qualitative research in which analytical method has been used to do understand and analysis of the opinion of the two.
