The Salvation of the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ Parents in the Hereafter: An Exploratory Study

Abstract

There are two types of opinions among Muslim scholars regarding the afterlife salvation of the parents of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The first opinion is that the parents of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ will be saved from punishment in the Hereafter. Three different views are offered in support of this. The first point of view is that the parents of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died during the time of Fatra. If the teachings of the Prophet or Messenger do not reach the people in the time of Fatra, then they will not be judged in the Hereafter. Therefore, there will be no impeachment against the parents of the Prophet ﷺ. The second point of view is that the parents of the Prophet ﷺ were adherents of the Abrahamic religion. Therefore, they will go to heaven. The third point of view is that the parents of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were resurrected and they believed in the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

The second opinion regarding the parents of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is that they will not be among those who will be saved in the Hereafter. Each of the traditions quoted by these people in support of their position has room for different interpretations. That is why Abu Zahra says that every hadith according to which the parents of the Prophet (ﷺ) are in the fire in the Hereafter, is rejected either because of the disturbance in its Sanad or because of the distance from the reality of the meaning. In short, it is not permissible for us to say that the parents of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) will not be saved from punishment in the Hereafter.
