This paper will examine the issue of the abuse of drugs and contemporary prevention techniques through the lens of Islamic teachings. Drug abuse has now been a significant issue of concern at the individual, family and society levels, especially among the youths. The paper explores the notion, classification, history and modern varieties of drugs, such as chemical substances and online drug trafficking, yet also evaluates the main influencing factors, which include poverty, unemployment, peer pressure, psychological stress, depression and instability in the family. It emphasizes the multidimensional effects of drug abuse such as the destruction of physical health, psychological disorders, deterioration of morality, loss of money, and promotion of criminal activities, which proves that addiction not only ruins people, but also undermines the social order and stability of societies. In Islamic terms, the study highlights that all intoxicants are highly unacceptable since they damage al-Aql (intellect) and al-Nafs (life) which are part of the major goals of the Islamic law (Maqasid al-Shariah) and the Quran and Hadith explicitly prohibits the use of substances that negatively affect human reasoning and behaviour. Self-purification (tazkiyah), piety (taqwa), rightful companionship, and frequent attendance at worship are some of the Islamic principles, which are brought out as effective preventive strategies against drug abuse. The paper also examines the modern national and international campaigns such as legal frameworks, governmental policies, education programs, media awareness, and rehabilitation efforts but the ongoing problem of drug abuse calls to an increased combined and value-based effort. This evidence indicates that a combination of law, social, and educational interventions with practical application of the Islamic moral and spiritual values is the key to the successful resolution of this problem, and a joint approach on the individual, family, societal, and state levels is needed to counteract drug abuse and create a healthy, balanced, and morally upright society.
